Why

"Why?"

Here's a question that we find ourselves often asking others. We often see this especially among children where some direction or explanation is given and the answer doesn't quite satisfy their minds so they will ask, "Yeah, but why?" We can also, as God's children, do the same thing with the Lord's commands. He gives a command in His word and sometimes our response is "Ok, but why?" Sometimes the Lord gives the answer to the "why" in other passages, but sometimes it's just simply do exactly what He said and trust that He wouldn't command anything that would not be for our best interests eternally. But there's one person who perhaps gets left out most often in our questioning of "Why?" and that is ourselves. We read passages like 1Pet.3:15 and nod our heads that we should live this way, but do we ever stop to question ourselves about the hope within us:

"But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts, and always be ready to give a defense to everyone who asks you a reason for the hope that is in you, with meekness and fear; having a good conscience, that when they defame you as evildoers, those who revile your good conduct in Christ may be ashamed." (1Pet.3:15-16)

Do we ever stop to ask ourselves why we do what we do? Why do we use the words we use, and what do those words mean or convey? Do we investigate our manner of life to make sure we have a biblical answer for what we do on a daily basis?

We will all certainly answer to God for everything we do -- how shall we answer Him (Matt.25:37-46; Heb.4:11-13; Eccl.12:13-14; Rom.14:12; 1Pet.4:1-6)? Wouldn't it be prudent to question ourselves and make certain we have a biblical answer - scriptural proof/godly direction - for all we do (1Pet.4:11; 2Tim.3:16-17; 2Pet.1:2-4)?

If we are to be judged for each thought, word, and action then would it not make good sense to make certain all is done with the authority of the Lord, the One to whom we must give account?

So let's ask the question today - but let's ask this vital question first of ourselves: "Why?"

Let us find the answer for our deeds and make sure it is all according to God's word. Let's investigate God's word with the desire to conform our lives to His word, not the other way around. May we prove to ourselves, with God's word, that we are indeed approved by Him (2Tim.2:15) and if we find ourselves out of step then let's find the answer for what we must do and get it right. We will answer to the Lord one day, are we ready?
