Father's Love

Father's Love

There are aspects about God that we gain a better insight into when we take on certain roles in life. We gain a perspective that we didn't quite fully grasp before; something within our minds and hearts just seems to click and we say, "Oh...So that's what that Scripture means." Or, "Ok, now I get it." Or perhaps even greater, "What love God has shown!"

I can certainly think of no greater example of this than having your child born into this world. The love like no other we feel for that newborn baby, the natural instinct we seem to have in caring for them -those things we never knew how to do which now suddenly become second-nature to us (like swaddling or comforting a crying child)- the overwhelming and boundless love we have for that sweet child staring back at us. The love we have for them that causes us as parents to glow from within and which gives us a smile like we've never had before. There's just something about holding your child that causes the outside world to fade away and causes a new one to form right there in your arms; for a long while, the world -your whole world- is right there in your arms. Nothing this life has to offer can ever replace that reality, those moments, that feeling, that flood of warm emotion. At that time you truly know, like never before, what it means to "pray without ceasing"; how to "rejoice always"; what manner of love 1 Corinthians 13 is describing; the reason Christ told His disciples to "be as little children."

We must be completely dependent upon God, our Father, and to rely on Him for all things. As His children we learn to trust Him, love Him, honor Him, fear Him, obey Him (Ps.64; Deut.6; Prov.3; Prov.15; Jn.14).

When I consider that God gave His only Son to die for those world who rejected and hated Him - God chose to give them an opportunity to be His by adoption through the blood of His Son - and that I am one of those...to think that God has allowed me into His family, has forgiven me of the great sins I have committed, and preserved my soul as it is this day...He gave His Son for mankind! Lord, I praise You.

Now that I'm a Father, I understand in human terms what it is to love your children, the great love we feel for our own. Even greater still is the love God Divinely showed His creation, those who refused to be called His, yet He has given the blessing of His Son's perfect sacrifice for their sins. He has given life, and continues to reach out offering it to a world who scoffs at the thought of Him...and He allows us yet another day. What love (2Pet.3:9)! Our love as humans, as parents, pales in comparison to God's love - yet it is His love that we are to strive daily to emulate; He has shown us perfect love, will we not return it, will we not spread that love to others (1Jn.1-5)?

What a blessing our little one is, what a tremendous responsibility God has given us, what love God has shown in giving yet another day - more love than perhaps our hearts can even contain or fathom.

What will we do with the love of God? The answer will be shown this day in our actions.
