Who Am I

Who Am I?

"Then King David went in and sat before the Lord; and he said: “Who am I, O Lord God? And what is my house, that You have brought me this far?..." (2 Sam.7:18)

When we consider God sent His only Begotten Son to die for our sins, don't we ask the same humble and sobering question "Who am I, Lord?"

God has sustained my life and yours to this point in time. Dwell on that rich thought for a while...

"The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance." (2Pet.3:9)

Do we recognize the blessing of each moment of each day the Lord gives us?

"For when we were still without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly. For scarcely for a righteous man will one die; yet perhaps for a good man someone would even dare to die. But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from wrath through Him. For if when we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more, having been reconciled, we shall be saved by His life. And not only that, but we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received the reconciliation." (Rom.5:6-11)

And God did this for you, for me, for the most decadent sinful person on the face of this earth, for even they who put the nails in His hands and feet, for even those who cried out "Crucify! Crucify!" Jesus died for ALL of mankind so that we can have the blessing of redemption through His blood, as He was the perfect sacrifice for all time for all the sinful.

"Lord, who are we?"

What lacks for us in regard to this is to come to Him on His terms, to be obedient to God for the rest of our days, to submit fully to Him and put away the sin. Will we not do it (Heb.12:1-4)?

My life has been permitted to continue to this moment and, knowing how I've missed the mark over and over before God, I stand in awe of Him. I am humbled by God's mercy and His blessing of my life over and over. Like David I inquire "Who am I...?" And I lift my voice in praise to my God.

The question now is how we live out what time we have left. We could sit back and use the rest of whatever time we have here to live life selfishly, but what sense would that make and what profit would it bring considering all the Lord has done? Would we throw these blessings back in the face of our Maker and treat as worthless the very life He gave us?! Shall we not serve and praise Him with our every breath?

Consider Matthew 16:24-26
"Then Jesus said to His disciples, “If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me. For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake will find it. For what profit is it to a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul?..."

What is there in this life that we're giving in exchange for our soul? What have we allowed to consume us, to stand in the way of following our Savior home to Heaven? What are we pursuing with our energies, time, or breath? Are we just seeking more things, or are we casting our eyes upon those blessings which shall never perish (Matt.6:19-20)?

What shall we do with today while it is still called today? How might we show our appreciation to God with the time He is so graciously giving unto us? While we still have the opportunity, will we not submit to Him and His ways? If we are separated from Him here, let us know and take to heart that we will be separated from Him for eternity if our time here ends while we are in this state -- will you correct your life while there is still time? God's mercy is abundant even now as you have breath within you -- don't waste your life or your time, choose to serve the Lord!

And so we're left with the question, "Who am I?" The answer is, we are those whom the Lord sent His Son to die for -- will we not live in constant appreciation of that by being in humble submission?

Each moment of life is a blessing from God, may we all treat it as such by serving Him with it. Let's end these thoughts by reflecting upon Psalm 8 through this day:

"O Lord, our Lord, How excellent is Your name in all the earth, Who have set Your glory above the heavens! Out of the mouth of babes and nursing infants You have ordained strength, Because of Your enemies, That You may silence the enemy and the avenger. When I consider Your heavens, the work of Your fingers, The moon and the stars, which You have ordained, What is man that You are mindful of him, And the son of man that You visit him? For You have made him a little lower than the angels, And You have crowned him with glory and honor. You have made him to have dominion over the works of Your hands; You have put all things under his feet, All sheep and oxen— Even the beasts of the field, The birds of the air, And the fish of the sea That pass through the paths of the seas. O Lord, our Lord, How excellent is Your name in all the earth!"

We praise and thank God with our lips, now may our lives reflect it.
